In October this year (2003) Robert McCrum published another “Top 100 Books” this time in (the UK’s Sunday newspaper) “The Observer”.
McCrum tells us more books are bought and borrowed in Britain than any other nation.
This is a list of 100 essential books reflecting - as McCrum freely admits - the fundamentally English (and white middle class) reader ship of the paper.
I have read 33 of them and by coincidence the soon to be added book 130 is here - number 92 - “Oscar and Lucinda”. Wonder if this List influenced me reading it?
